Co. Laois VEC Adult Learners Celebrate Education
In preparation for the sixth annual nationwide Adult Learners’ Festival, students and staff at Laois VEC Adult Learning Centre produced a short promotional video which was launched on youtube two weeks before the festival began. The one minute film, entitled ‘How do you celebrate yours?’ shows adult learners from Laois enjoying the many benefits of returning to education and highlights the different approaches people have to learning. The video was conceived as a unique way to promote both the Adult Learners’ Festival and adult education in general.
As part of the week-long festivities, the Adult Learning Centre organised a number of events for their students. A group of adult learners participated in a viewing of the film ‘South Pacific’ at the Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise with an opportunity to discuss the film after screening. Learners from the Adult Refugee Programme participated in a question and answer session with an Information Officer from the Adult Education Guidance Information Service. Adult learners participating on the Return to Education Programme were given a guided tour of the GAA museum in Croke Park, Dublin. Rounding off the week on Saturday 25th February, a group of students had the opportunity to participate in discussions and workshops at The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) Student Day. Students also had the chance to share their views with the NALA student committee.
Throughout the week students also received FETAC certificates in a variety of subjects including Art & Design, Computer Applications, Consumer Awareness, Food & Nutrition, English and Maths.
